Haus of fibre
Come in! You can fully be yourself in this colourful, warm and quirky home. It is a special place, crafted by and for the queer community. Make yourself at home and discover how textiles tell stories of connection, loss and resilience.
About the exhibition
'Haus of fibre' is the result of a unique co-creation process. We wanted to create an exhibition about the role of textiles in the work of artists from the LGBTQIA+ community, and this story is of course best told by queer artists themselves. That is why, after an open call, we invited Nixie van Laere, Célio Braga, Chathuri Nissansala and Yamuna Forzani to shape this exhibition with us.
'Haus of fibre' not only shows how contemporary artists use textiles in their work, but also offers a historical perspective. After all, textiles have always played a role in the search for one's own identity, in forming communities and resisting established (gender, sexual and intersectional) norms.
This exhibition is for anyone who wants to learn more about how textiles have represented queer stories in the past and present. So welcome and make yourself at home!
A crafted home
'Haus of fibre' is a dynamic, creative and handmade house, complete with a living room, kitchen, bedroom, hall and garden. This décor is inspired by how queer people often need to craft their own place and family to live safely outside the framework of the classic cisgender, straight family. In each room, a member of the co-creation group will take you through a related theme. They offer new perspectives on works from our collection and share their own views on the relationship between queer art and textiles. In a personal video portrait, they take you into their experiences and artistic practice.
