Workshop Woven Club

Discover the technique of weaving and design your own woven patch

Students design their own woven patch inspired by different makers from the TextielLab.

Patches have been used for centuries to repair damaged clothing. Early civilisations used fabrics and leather to patch holes in clothes. In the 1960s and 1970s, patches also became popular in hippie culture and with motorbike clubs. Motorcyclists wore patches with their club's name and logo on their leather jackets, while hippies used patches to express political views and peace symbols. Today, patches are still used for repairs or in fashion. Thanks to fashion house Gucci, among others, patches got a real revival.

During this workshop, students design and produce a unique, hand-woven patch, going through all the steps of the design process. In doing so, the students step into the shoes of a textile designer who is inspired by the history of textiles and has designed a product for the label by TextielMuseum. They immerse themselves in the designer's sources of inspiration, materials and weaves, and then create their own interpretation of these. In this way, they weave past and present into their patch in a sustainable way, as we use leftover yarn from the lab. The workshop includes a weaving card for further work at home and at school.
