THE DESIGNER

BERTJAN POT

ABOUT BERTJAN POT

Bertjan Pot became well known for his lamps “Random Light” and “Stairway to Heaven” and also his chair “Random Chair”. He’s been featured in a solo exhibition in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, among many others. His work is on display in the permanent collection of MoMa (New York), Victoria & Albert Museum (London) and Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam).

Bertjan Pot is best known for his unique way of working. He finds inspiration for his work in the world around him. By experimenting with materials and technologies he tends to find new ways of using them, which leads to innovative designs. This was the main reason for TextielMuseum to ask him to be the first designer in the Design Studio.

“I TEND TO SAY THAT ONE COLOUR IS NOT A COLOUR.”

Bertjan Pot’s about his vision: “As a designer, I need to experiment. I have to play with shapes, materials and colours. I don’t want to draw everything in advance: I need to have materials going through my hands so I can work with them. That’s how I make lamps, tables and masks. Whenever I have an idea I start with the simplest elaboration. I look at the smallest possible building block and experiment with those building blocks to create something new. Check it out, when you put these two threads together you get a very bright shade of grey. But if you look closely, you can see that it’s a combination of green and pink. In that regard, one colour is not a colour. I think that’s cool. But that’s just me. You might like something completely different. Everyone has a different colour taste for that matter.”
