Quilting Masterclass: Curves, precision and design

By Jenny Haynes

In this four-day patchwork masterclass, award-winning quilt designer Jenny Haynes will teach you her ‘twice-cut Drunkard's Path’ technique, one of the key techniques of her patchwork method. The class is based on her latest design, the Havsglas Quilt, which stems from her fascination and research into overlapping curves and transparency.

What will you learn?

You will work on the Havsglas design, for which Jenny developed the ‘twice cut’ technique. This involves sewing main and shadow colours together in curved shapes, then cutting them up and sewing them back together. This creates the suggestion of transparency and layered curves.

Other skills that will be covered include sewing curves without pins, joining seams, use of colour and the basics of quilting and patchwork design. Jenny will also teach you her quilting hack with freezer paper.

For whom?

This masterclass is designed for quilters with intermediate to advanced experience who want to refine their skills. Beginner quilters with courage are also welcome but keep in mind that a basic knowledge of quilting is important.

Preparation and supplies

To get all participants ready for the master class, Jenny runs a ‘Get ready!’ session via Zoom a few months in advance. This allows you to get oriented on what we will be doing during the workshop and get your fabric and tools ready. In the ‘Get ready!’ session, Jenny will update you on the Havsglas design and pattern, stencilling and pre-cutting, and give suggestions on different ways to choose fabrics and colours using tools such as drawing programmes and colour apps. These preparations will get you off to a flying start in February!

You will be sent the recording of this online session so you can review everything at your leisure. You will also receive PDF templates and the Havsglas Quilt pattern (in two sizes).
