Protective underwear

5 December 2014

Julia Veldhuijzen van Zanten worked in the TextielLab on her graduation project for the Design Academy in Eindhoven. She developed a new solution for incontinence. With these textiles she won the New Material Award.

Protective Underwear consists of a beautiful knitted woollen and silk brief.  The slip is combined with removable incontinence material that is comfortable and washable. The incontinence material is made of absorbent yarns and microfibers. She collaborated with Artofil.

Protective Underwear offers a solution for people who are experiencing the discomfort of incontinence. She found in her immediate environment that people with incontinence are more likely to isolate themselves from social life, because of uncertainties and anxieties. According to Veldhuijzen van Zanten practical solutions, such as incontinence pads, go beyond the emotional impact that people experience. Moreover, incontinence diapers are not sustainable, attractive and comfortable to wear.
