During this masterclass, you will get started with the basic principles of knitting on the domestic knitting machine. By performing different exercises you learn a number of basic techniques and you explore the various possibilities that the machine offers. At the end of the masterclass, you have knitted various samples to continue experimenting at home.

Do you want to try machine knitting, but you don’t know how? During this masterclass, you will gain your first experience with the Brother hand knitting machine and its tools. You will learn more about how the machine is technically put together, such as the division and tension. In addition, you will work with various basic techniques such as cast on, bind off, increase, decrease, transport stitches, change colours and short rows. You will experiment with different yarns to discover the effect this has on the knit.

Goal of the masterclass
The technical and practical knowledge will help you on your way to understanding the machine, then using it independently and experimenting with yarns and stitches. At the end of the masterclass, you will go home with ten samples in which you have incorporated different techniques.

Masterclass by Vera Roggli
Vera Roggli will be the teacher of this masterclass. She graduated as a fashion designer at ArtEZ in Arnhem. She then started working for fashion designer Christian Wijnants in Antwerp, where she also gained her first experience in knitting. After that, she started the textile design studio Wiesi Will together with Laure van Brempt. On the one hand, they work together as a freelance knit designer for various fashion designers. On the other hand, they work on their own projects in which they design with a love for craftsmanship and experimentation, with a lot of attention for traditional techniques and industrial possibilities. The work of Wiesi Will has distinctly colourful imagery. In addition to Wiesi Will, Vera works on her own artistic projects around textiles and is also following a Master’s degree in Textile Design at KASK & conservatory in Ghent to delve into weaving.
